Uni launches letting agency
THE University of Plymouth Students Union (UPSU) has launched its own student letting agency.
UPSU's knowledge and resources have been put into Plymouth Students Union Accommodation – a service designed to improve the quality of living in Plymouth for students and maintain a good standard in the condition of the property for landlords.
For students, UPSU knows how stressful dealing with agents, landlords and finding the right property can be.
In fact, a significant proportion of its advice centre queries relate to problems with accommodation.

The property maintenance programme ensures everyone is looked after and any issues arising are swiftly resolved.
For landlords, resources have gone into educating the students on living in their property, covering key topics like wear and tear, ventilation and the provision of equipment.
This bespoke pack is provided free of charge to each of the students, helping them maintain the property to their best capability.
Students are looking for quality accommodation so landlords can call or pop in to the office to discuss their property.
The service starts with a viewing of the property, giving you advice on the service and becoming accredited.
With the office based on the University Campus, in the entrance to the Student Union, it is ideally placed to deliver a service to the students and their property.
UPSU provides advice and services for the wellbeing of students and is a charitable organisation investing back into the facilities on campus.
For more information, landlords should call 01752 588381.

“Given the legendary rapacity of certain letting agencies, on the face of it this seems like a great idea.
However, as a former UPSU officer, my worries are: a) what representation from the SU can a student who is in dispute with the SU letting agency expect to receive from the SU welfare services, and b) what protection is in place for SU welfare staff if their advice to the student is not in the interests of the SU letting agency?
There seems to be a disturbing potential for conflicts of interest here.”
