A HEARING to decide if a club can be re-opened in Union Street has been adjourned.

Yesterday members of Plymouth City Council's licensing committee met with businessmen, police and environment officers, at the Council House, to debate an application from Fletcher A Ltd to develop the former Millennium nightspot.

But the hearing was adjourned for around three weeks so police could have more time to look at documents associated with the application.

The application asks the committee, chaired by councillor Thomas Browne, to grant permission for live music, recorded music, dancing, late night refreshment and the supply of alcohol "until 0300 on weekdays and Sundays and 0500 in the case of late night refreshment".

“I worked at he building in the 1960's when it was the Odeon Cinema and the Top Rank Ballroom. It had previously been a traditional very large Odeon with the Iconic tower from the days of Oscar Deutch. Rank Theatres converted it to be the only 70mm fully equipped cinema in the region, it had a massive curved screen and seven track sound. when they split it to provide a stadium style cinema and under it in what had been the stalls was the Top Rank Ballroom. The standard of presentation was superb, the long established General Manager Was Major ( Teddy ) Edwards and for some time I was the House Manager for this place and for the Drake.”

“A wrecking ball would be more appropriate for the place it is a hovel. Had the misfortune to go there once during the day when the lights were on to carry out some work - as I have already said it is a toilet. Suppose strobe lights, music, booze and drugs can even make a toilet an attractive place to spend an evening.

Well at least the outside photos reflect what lies within.”
