FRIEDRICH Kreisler, better known as Fritz, was regarded as one of the greatest violinists of all time.

Like many leading players of his generation, he produced a characteristic and immediately recognisable sound, famed for its sweet tone and expressive phrasing.

To mark the 50th anniversary of his death, violinist, Peter Fisher, with Peter Hewitt (piano), return to the International Concert Series at Sherwell United Church, North Hill, Plymouth, with an hour-long lunchtime recital next Thursday at 1pm.

The two Peters, in fact, began their musical collaboration with a previous recital in the series back in 2004 and, since then, have given numerous concerts in London and throughout the UK.

In December 1928, Kreisler recorded Grieg's Violin Sonata No 3 in C minor with another legendary artist, pianist and composer Sergei Rachmaninov, and appropriately this piece is the main work in next week's recital. Kreisler is also much loved for his numerous shorter own compositions, with many, such as Liebesleid and Liebesfreud, reflecting the 'gemütlich' or cosy lifestyle of pre-war Vienna, his city of birth.

Equally he wasn't shy of creating pastiches which he then ascribed to earlier composers like Pugnani, Tartini and Vivaldi. When he later came clean, critics were initially unimpressed, until Kreisler astutely reminded them that they had liked them before, saying, "The name changes, but the value remains!"

The Sherwell Church recital will also feature a number of these popular works by Kreisler, some of which are also featured on Peter Fisher and Peter Hewitt's new CD, Encore! Encore! Tickets (£6.50) are available in advance from the church, weekdays between 9.30am and noon, can be downloaded from the online box office at wegottickets.com, or bought at the door, if unsold.
