PLYMOUTH council leader Cllr Vivien Pengelly has been shortlisted for a national Leader of the Year award.

She goes up against nine other contenders, including the leaders of Manchester, Lambeth and Hammersmith and Fulham councils in London in the C'llr Achievement Awards.

Mrs Pengelly, who was nominated by council colleagues for the awards run by the Local Government information Unit and the CCLA, has been leader of the council since 2007 and a councillor since 1989.

During her leadership the council has significantly improved its performance and managed a range of major changes in the city, including the sell-off of Plymouth Citybus.

The council was awarded the top award in local government, the Best Achieving Council in 2010.

Its services for children were recently rated as "excellent" by Ofsted and its fostering and adoption services were judged to be "outstanding".

Mrs Pengelly said: "It is an honour to have been shortlisted among so many entries from around the country.

"As councillors we work as a team and being shortlisted recognises what we have achieved together. While we do it to make a difference in the community, not for accolades, it is good for Plymouth when what we do is recognised nationally."

Plymouth Compton councillor David Stark has also been shortlisted in the awards.

Mr Stark, a long-serving conservative Devon County and Plymouth City councillor is in the running for the Judges' Special Award for Outstanding Contribution to Local Government.

The winners of the C'llr Achievement Awards will be announced at the end of February.

“The double whammy that finished the Labour council was the fact that (a) they bulldozed the Royal Parade underpass, forcing us to use a killer crossing, and (b) their bulldozer destroyed the historic national heritage murals that lined it, thereby offending the strong sense of national pride in Plymouth.
Labour might get away with that sort of pinko anti-british behaviour elsewhere, but not down here..:)”

    “@roundhead0

Very funny; Vivs team (I use the term loosely) caught selling waste unlawfully and without proper documentation! That has a familiar ring to it if you consider the broader picture currently threatening this once busy city.

Now, where we once had a bus station we have an open toilet, trains struggle to reach us at all and the airport has become a vacant building plot awaiting the highest bidder. But we do have the life centre and the incinerator to look forward to.

I wont harp on about the incinerator or how this city and its people have been well and truly stitched up (allegedly) with the deal and with the health issues it will almost certainly shower on our children. That would be unfair at a time we are supposed to be celebrating Viv's (alleged) amazing success. Let's all instead enjoy the numerous pictures, misleading claims and (allegedly) false statements that will be appearing on the PCC website in weeks to come.

By the way, the Environment Agency said the selling of illegal waste by Plymouth City Council revealed 'serious management failures' - I think that's what most comments on here are suggesting!

Viv Pengelley, waste of space (allegedly)”

“At least Viv has got more .alls than Tudor and whatever way you look at this story, it's good for Plymouth. Unfortunately to many left wing liberals and labour councillors with nothing constructive to say.

What is interesting is none of these people would have the gumption to tell Viv to her face and none of them except the labour councillors can be bothered to mput their money where their mouth is.

Keep it going Viv you've got my vote.”
