Volunteers need to be acknowledged
THE forthcoming Police and Crime Commissioner election has highlighted the many difficulties our police service faces, such as rising crime figures, budget cuts and loss of officers and police support staff.
What has not been mentioned are the many volunteers in the Special Constabulary, neighbourhood watch, boat watch, farm watch and community speed watch who provide valuable support to the Constabulary.
As a former police officer in Devon and Cornwall I know they make a difference to hard-pressed police services and whoever is elected on November 15 would do well to ensure they are supported and their roles strengthened and expanded to ensure our communities are safe.
