Week of special events toasts 'army' of carers
A WEEK of special events celebrating the selfless devotion of the city's 'secret army' of carers starts today.
Charities and organisations across Plymouth have joined forces to put on a range of activities – from canoeing and climbing to tea dances and an awards ceremony.
This year's Carers Week, from June 13 to 19, aims to highlight the hard work of people who look after a family member or friend in need.
There are at least 24,000 carers in Plymouth – almost 10 per cent of the city's total population – according to council estimates.
Organisers aim to reach out to carers who may not be accessing support available to them.
Sarah Tuhill, of Carers Champions in Plymouth, said "We are always trying to reach carers who have not yet accessed any services to let them know what help and support is available to help them in their caring role.
"There is a range of different events taking place and we hope that there is something for everyone."
Events includes:
Today – Friends and Families canoeing, abseiling and kayaking for young carers at The Mountbatten Centre from 9am to 5pm.
Monday – Launch of Carers Week at Derriford Hospital foyer 10am to 3pm. Senior NHS staff, carers organisations will all be available throughout the day to answer questions and give information.
