Woman accused of claiming she was dead has trial date set

A TRIAL date has been set for a woman accused of committing fraud by claiming she was dead.

Juliet Clarke, known previously as Knight, allegedly made the statement in a bid to get a man's banking details.

Clarke, aged 30, appeared again before Plymouth magistrates to answer five charges of fraud by false representation involving two male complainants.

A previous hearing was told she allegedly defrauded one of the men by claiming she was "due to inherit substantial amounts of money" and that she had "contracted cancer" but was "pregnant" by one of the complainants.

Prosecutors claim she retained a previous partner's bank details and debit card, which she used to make unauthorised transactions adding up to about £2,000.

One charge accused her of committing fraud by making a false representation: "namely that you had died and that the executors of your will needed to obtain Ricky Yelland's new banking details".

All five cases of false representation took place in the Plymouth area dating between October 24, 2011 and December 31, 2011.

Knight, of St Michaels Close, Lawhitton near Launceston, has denied all charges and was granted bail on condition she does not contact any prosecution witnesses.

Magistrates set a date for a two-day trial starting on May 9.
