It is understood the grainy footage was filmed off Honicknowle Lane in Honicknowle and not outside a city nightclub as was initially reported by police.
The footage was posted on social networking sites, quickly leading to enraged viewers to demand action.
A police spokesman said the person who filmed the attack had voluntarily come forward and handed over their footage.
In addition, the victim seen being assaulted, has also contacted police and registered an official complaint.
The spokesman said: "We have had a number of witnesses come forward and we have taken statements from them.
"A woman has come forward and made a complaint and the video evidence has been provided.
"The case is being investigated as an assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
"We understand the video footage was shot with the express purpose of being provided to police and we would like to stress the witness came forward to provide that evidence.
"We would still like to hear from anyone who was in the area of Honicknowle Lane on Sunday between midnight and 1am and witnessed any activity."
Anyone with information about the incident should call Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 quoting police log number 138 10/3/2013.
