Plymouth woman found guilty of £3,600 benefit fraud
A WOMAN falsely claimed more than £3,000 in benefits, a court heard.
Julie Brinton, aged 38, denied dishonestly failing to declare a change of circumstances which affected her benefit claim between November 2008 and December 2009. But she was found guilty after a trial at Plymouth Crown Court.
Sean Brunton, opening the case for the Department for Work and Pensions, told the jury that she claimed income support as a single mother. But she failed to declare she was living in Holmes Avenue, Efford, with her working partner. Mr Brunton said she was overpaid £3,657 in benefits.
Nigel Hall, for Brinton, now of Duke Street, Devonport, told the court after the verdict that she was paying back the money. He said she was of good character and had suffered shame due to the case.
