ONE HUNDRED women aged from one to 100 have gathered for an event in Plymouth to celebrate the centenary of International Women's Day.

Plymouth Age Concern and Plymouth City Council's Youth Service helped to bridge the generation gap at a day which included a fashion show and songs from all-female choirs. One hundred women aged one to 100 also posed for a photograph taken by female students at Plymouth College of Art and Design of

Yesterday's event at the Guildhall was the culmination of weeks of work starting back in December when young women involved with the Council's Youth Service were asked to meet older women involved with Age Concern to help bridge the generation gap.

Penny Newman, Senior Advocate for Plymouth Age Concern, said: "It soon became clear that a love of music and fashion united the group most and so the fashion show and choir grew from there."

The fashion show, which featured models from the group, showcased 100 years of women's fashion and included outfits from 1911 to the present day, with a bridal section from across the years.

The choir, also made up of women from the group, featured songs from the past 100 years including classic wartime medleys and modern hits from artists such as Pixie Lott and McFly.

Joining the choir were girls' choirs from Mary Dean and Montpellier Primary Schools.

The event has been nominated for a Spirit in the Community Award from the Drake Foundation.

“This was an amazing event. I hope that the event is repeated next year and that more people have the chance to attend.

Agreed that perhaps there should be more coverage of these events before they happen.”

“What a pity it wasn't advertised more. I would have loved to have seen it. Some times it is hard to know what is going on in Plymouth, without having to search the local weekly papers. I read it has happened after the fact. Can the Herald have a page of what is on tomorrow, then I will enjoy having more in my life to enjoy.”

“I attended this event and had such a fun time. Was a pity it wasn't supported by more people. The childrens' choirs sang beautifully and praise must go to music teachers who encourage the young folk to participate in this activity. The highlight of my day was the elderly lady dressed in her Army uniform who made me feel proud to be female and British. The audience participated in the singing with the Intergenerational choir and there was a spontaneous rendition of 'Rock around the Clock' by the audience when a small 'hiccup' occurred caused by the electronic equipment faltering for a moment. To cap it all the refreshments were free of charge. All in all a successful, entertaining afternoon. Please find a reason for organizing something similar next year. Thanks to all the organizers for their hard work.”
