FIREFIGHTERS rescued two women who had become stuck down the side of a steep hill in Whitleigh Woods.

Crews from Crownhill and Greenbank, together with the Specialist Rescue Team (SRT) from Camels Head attended the scene at around 4pm yesterday at the woods off Tamerton Foliot Road.

There they found the two women becoming increasingly distressed.

The women were given first aid and reassurance while crews awaited the arrival of the SRT.

St John Ambulance has spaces on its four one-off sessions at the Central Library.

The sessions cover basic first aid skills, dealing with bleeding, burns, choking, fractures, hypothermia, how to perform a primary survey and how to put someone into the recovery position.

The sessions at Central Library will be on Tuesdays – October 30, November 6, 13 and 20. For details and to book email emma.healey@devon.sja.org.uk or call 01392 822646.

A FRUITY community event will take place this weekend.

The Tamar Valley Community Apple Pressing Day is a free event in which people are asked to bring their own apples and bottles and make juice. Tamar Grow Local and the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty team have joined forces to share an apple press with the local community, at the Tamar Valley Centre, near Gunnislake, on Saturday from 10am and 3pm.

“No, Betty, if they were stuck they were stuck and that's what the emergency services are for. Or perhaps you think they should have been left there to either starve or fall and injure themselves?”
