IN THE top Ladies Division A match, the defending champions Michelle Cooke and Liz Morley had to be at their most consistent at vital points to overcome determined play from challengers Luisa Warring and Lyn Helliwell. Although Cooke and Morley won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 it was only in the third set that they really took control. Alison Diver and Linda Trebilcock kept in the race for second place, recovering from a slow start to defeat Janet Butler and Linda Haston 2-6; 6-3, 6-5. Sue Gale came in as a sub to partner Nikki Aitken and in a match spoiled by the strong wind they let a first set lead slip as Joy Pellow and sub Bing Mei won by 5-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Joan McGregor and Helen Foote started well against Julia Whetton and Lynne Macfarlane in a Division B match, winning the first set 6-3. However, it was then all downhill as they won only one more game as Whetton and Macfarlane upped the standard to deservedly win by 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. Twenty four hours later McGregor and Foote played a super and much more confident game and were delighted to overcome Liz Gill and sub Marian Phillips by 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 in a match where all four players had their moments of brilliance. Whetton and Macfarlane had two much more comfortable wins, beating Michele Pooley and Suzudo Reed 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 and Coral Smith and sub Fiona Murphy 6-1, 6-3, 6-1.
Having returned from his Egypt break, Richard Avent was back to winning ways when, with Joy Pellow, they defeated Simon Dusting and Hannah Odam 6-3, 6-2, 6-5 in the Mixed Doubles. Howard and Lyn Helliwell, after winning by 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 against the bottom pair Martyn Wolstencroft and Mel Smith, found the second placed pair of Andrew Leigh and sub Hannah Robinson too good for them and were beaten 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. Ricky Palmer and Nikki Aitken struggled to defeat Yuen Sui and Juliet Memery 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Simon Prout and Matt Green had to survive a set point in the first set, but just kept their unbeaten record in Men's Division A against Chris Williams and Paul Wardle. Williams and Wardle, from two sets down, were worthy of a third set success, with Prout and Green winners by 6-5; 6-4, 3-6. Neil Hunt and Simon Yeo continued their push for second place, conceding just four games in a 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 win over Steve Randall and Harry Bird. In Division B it looked all over for Bernard Lien and Dave Pemberton, as at one set all they trailed 1-5 in the third set against Jamie Stephenson and Kevin Thomas. Somehow Lien and Pemberton stopped the rot and won the next five games for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-5 win. Peter Bradley and Matt Smith will probably win Division C, as with matches in hand, they recorded their 10th consecutive straight-sets win in defeating Alan and Sam Donaldson 6-1, 6-0, 6-2.
Other results: Ladies' Doubles: C Bunney/J Cansfield beat D Grieve/B Jensen 6-3, 6-1, 6-0
