PRESSURE is mounting for action to clean up Falmouth's empty Woolworth's store .

The delay in getting a business into the store is not said to be down to the administration process, but because of the current market.

As reported in last week's West Briton there are concerns about the impact of the prominent building which has become a target for vandals after lying empty for the last six months.

The building was owned by the Woolworths Public Limited Company and therefore passed to receivers. But a spokesman for administrators Deliotte said: "This is not the only site which is still empty. Around 180 out of 807 have been sold or scheduled to be sold and the rest are still with agents.

"The market condition and the nature of the sites, being larger than average, are part of the reason so many are still empty."

However there are calls that the shop be leased out in the short term. Despite a number of calls to the agent this week, no one was available for comment.

A Facebook campaign was launched back in April by Amanda to turn the site into an indoor market, which has 206 members and she has now launched a petition.

"If you would like to see the shop put into good use please back my campaign to create local jobs and boost business in the town by creating an indoor market," she said.

The petition, started last Thursday, already has 86 signatures. Meanwhile Sean Hughes has been running a Facebook site calling for a Walkabout bar in the town and said the Woolworth store was an ideal venue.
