Work at night
I FEEL the need to write again regarding the fiasco created by the current roadworks at Laira Bridge.
The traffic created by these works is not just inconvenient, it is appalling. Queues backing down as far as Lanhydrock Road or further on Embankment Road and gridlocked back to Charles Cross roundabout effecting even as far as North Cross, not to mention backing up Tothill.
Journey time to Plymstock from the town centre can be as long as an hour.
So I ask again, why isn't work being carried out at night and why not at the weekends? This work needs to be carried out as quick as possible, it seems the council is happy to see businesses and the public suffer, but not prepared to spend the extra to see these works completed in a timely fashion.
From Monday to Friday,
Come and enjoy our special menu at £12 per person for 3 course-meal.

I must say I have been waiting for a flood of letters regarding this debacle, I can only assume Plymothians amazing patience is hard at work or they have been so beaten into the ground by deaf councils their will to fight has left them. Either of which must suit the council nicely.

“@jimjamjonny
Are you out of your tiny mind?? Whatever were you thinking of man....Open the bus lane?? They couldn't possibly do something as outrageous and, mind-numbingly crazy as this, what, you, mean, let a car use a bus-lane, oh my god, whatever next, buses being allowed to use the only car lane on Royal Parade??”

“I agree with you as well Stuart but complaining on the pages of the Herald is like banging one's head repeatedly against a brick wall.
There are a few threads on here already about this repeated insult to our intelligence but try getting any replies or answers out of the officials who have the actual power to do something sensible about it.
If they do in fact even read any of these legitimate complaints it is apparent that they don't have the cojones to admit they have yet again gotten it very wrong and have yet again caused total chaos in this City. Too expensive to work 24/7, where does that come from?
The priority should be with getting commerce back to normal in a city of this size as quickly as possible. What about the money that is being lostevery minute by everyone sitting in traffic jams for hours? Time is money and the only way to save it is to get this shoddy mess sorted quickly and that can only be done by working on it 24/7. I also agree that there doesnt seem to be any sense of urgency apparant at all amougst the contractors. Apart from a lot of standing about pointing at things coupled with mass head scratching as if to say, "what are we doing here again"? No hope. I'm getting a boat, it would be quicker to pedalo to Plymouth than to drive.”

“I was caught up in the traffic for the first time yesterday it took me 45 minute to get from charles cross to the morrisons roundabout. Two things i noticed was the pedestrian crossing lights, why so many???? I think there were 4 or 5 sets in a space of 300 yards, none in sequence and this seemed to be holding up the traffic more than the roadworks. Secondly, it took me 10 minutes to get past Laira bridge and in that time I saw one man in a JCB doing nothing and 12 men standing by the fencing with hands in pockets doing nothing but smoking. I thought they might be waiting for a piece of equipment or materials to arrive. 90 minutes later, coming back the opposite way, same men stood in the same place still doing nothing. If you are going to restrict road access then please take the opportunity to do something while cars are crawling past.”

“Roadworks are a fact of life. They could work at night, but it would cost a lot more money and they don't have any spare cash.”
