WORK to renovate and improve piles and pontoons in Sutton Harbour will begin next week.

A “piling barge” will arrive in the harbour on Monday for a three-week programme during which it will remove 16 old piles - the upright poles which hold the pontoons (walkways) in place.

The work, which is part of a £240,000 investment scheme by Sutton Harbour Holdings, also includes the removal of the old Marrowbone slip pontoons and piles on the eastern side of the harbour, and reconfiguring some berths to accommodate more boats.

The pedestrian waterfront walkway at East Quays will be closed between 8am and 6pm on weekdays while the work is completed.

Marina manager Mark Brimacombe said: “This work is part of our ongoing investment to transform Sutton Harbour into a national destination.

“Some of the pontoons and piles have reached the end of their lives so we are removing those and taking the opportunity to reconfigure some of our berths.

“This will give us greater flexibility, for vessels of all sizes. By creating an open area of water on the eastern side of the harbour it will also be more accessible and easier to clean, so there will be important environmental benefits.”

“I know it because I walk through the harbour on my way home from work, jackass. If you're so ignorant you don't care that the Herald can't even accurately report a simple story supplied by its criticism-immune friends at SHH, then I don't think you're in really a position to be calling anyone else 'sad'.

    Plymoids. Tsk.”

“Get a life nevman, you are sad to even know that never mind boast that you know it. No-one cares except you. Maybe the journalist reported it today to see if some sad person complained and you did ahahaha the jokes on you.”

“Excellent up-to-the-minute reporting, Editor Boy. The work on the pontoons started four days ago, and the East Quays walkway was closed on Tuesday.”

“Is there still a Sutton Harbour? When I came to Plymouth 10 years ago there were open sweeping views across the water but since then it's been turned into a "boat park" and we can hardly see the water for all the clutter of boats, masts and pontoons”
