WORK will begin to install another 'count down' crossing.

Improvements on the pedestrian crossing at the bottom of Charles Street, near Primark, will begin on Monday.

Count down signals, similar to those recently introduced on Royal Parade, will make it clearer how much time pedestrians have to cross the road.

The central reservation will also be widened to provide more space between the two sets of lights and new road markings will help to clarify which lanes motorists need to take for different destinations.

The crossing will be closed to pedestrians while work is taking place, which should be completed by the end of January.

One lane on Charles Street, the side nearest Drake Circus will be closed to traffic,

Motorists are advised to leave extra time for their journeys or use an alternative route as delays are possible.

Bus services will be running as normal.

“Bring back the subways, and make the barriers in the middle of the roads high enough that people can't think about jumping them. Pedestrians can then cross the roads safely, and traffic will flow much more smoothly - potholes and appalling bus parking allowing of course...”

“There are two things that confuse me about Plymouth City Centre: 1) Why on earth anyone other than Poundland and Brighthouse want to trade there and 2) Why aren't traders much more vocal about the disgusting state of the city centre.

As to me...well on a Saturday, my visit to the city centre usually involves a walk from my home on the Hoe to North Road station to catch a train to somewhere more bearable, being careful not to break my neck or soak my feet on broken and loose paving on the way.”

“Same on Madeira Road on the Hoe. The council appears to have got some cowboy builders in (and probably still managed to give away our council tax to them at a rate way over the odds). What do we get? A botched patchwork of pink and white paving in this so-called tourist hotspot that within weeks was full of broken slabs again. Any guarantee with the work? Probably not or maybe no one at the council could be bothered to invoke it.

This is why we see alternate labour then conservative councils in Plymouth. Whatever their party political badge, they always mismanage just about everything they touch that people angrily vote the last rubbish out only to get more rubbish. Evans, Pengelly...trash that doesn't give two hoots for our city.”

“the £3.9 million spent 3 years ago on paving slabs outside woolworths now has to be tarmaced over because the slabs are too dangerous. Could the police make enquiries into why the city centre management has "lost" so much of our money.”

“If the council have any interest at all in pedestrian safety, how about repairing the hundreds of loose or broken paving slabs in the city centre? The state of paving in Plymouth is a disgrace. It is the worst I have seen anyone by a very large margin.

I spoke to a councillor I happen to know about this and was told that there wasn't a hope in hell's chance of any substantive repairs as there was no money. They added that it didn't matter "because the council's insurance will pay for accident claims".

Much of the city centre urgently needs re-paving. It really is shockingly bad. Don't others notice this? It should be at least as great a priority as pothole repairs. Not only is tge paving in a dangerous state but it will also do nothing fir attracting shoppers. I dread to think what visitors from Exeter, Truro or Bristol must think of our decaying, neglected city centre.”

“I can't believe this Council - why waste money on this 'upgrade' when the existing crossing is perfectly fine, or are people so idiotic that they can't work out how to cross a road ! Especially with the state of some of the roads around Plymouth, surely this money could be better spent?”

“so no money to repair the roads but as always the council has plenty of money to create more traffic jams by narrowing the road!”
