YOUNGSTERS in Devonport will showcase their dance moves to parents and students at Stoke Damerel Community College today.

Cornish hip-hop dance troupe Flava, who featured on the ITV show Britain's Got Talent, has been working with the police to run a series of dance workshops to inspire young people.

The workshops have been supported and funded by Plymouth Youth Service's Streetwise project and Devon and Cornwall Constabulary.

Flava recently received a Philip Lawrence honorary award for their outstanding contribution to the community, and is working with local young people to build confidence through dance techniques.

They have been teaching students from the Devonport area, aged from 11 to 18, how to work with others and express themselves in a positive way.

Local Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) have been attending the workshops and engaging with the students to discover what type of activities they would like in the area.

One of the routines focuses on bullying, highlighting the impact it has on people and how it makes people feel.

Project co-ordinator Sergeant Julie M'Hand said: "Young people often get a bad press but they have so much potential if they are given the right opportunities. We hope that the students feel inspired to do something they enjoy whether that is dance, music or any other activity."

Flava founder Kyle Richardson, 19, added: "We want kids to look to us as positive role models and show them that if they put their mind to something they can achieve so much. We work hard, but it's a lot of fun and we really enjoy what we do. Hopefully we'll inspire other kids to want to do the same."
