MORE than 1,000 city school children from 66 schools took part in the 2008 Plymouth and West Devon Primary Schools' Athletics Championships at Brickfields.

The two-day competition, organised by community sports athletics coach Lance Chatfield, and supported by Paula Morgan and the Sir John Hunt SSCO partnership, witnessed a host of impressive performances from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupils.

There were overall prizes on offer to the winning teams in three categories – Minor Schools', Intermediate Schools' and Major Schools'.

In the Minor Schools', Ermington held off the challenge of runners-up Plympton St Maurice and third-placed St Paul's to take the honours.

Their score of 40 points in the boys' competitions proved crucial for Ermington in their overall total of 69 points.

The Intermediate Schools' category developed into a two-horse race, with Langley Juniors and Oreston battling it out for the first prize.

After a close call, it was Langley (66pts) who finished first with Oreston (64pts) second and St Peter's RC (46pts) third.

Hyde Park were the victors in the Major Schools' competition after both the boys and girls racked up points to reach a total of 60.

Goosewell (54pts) were second with Widey Court (45pts) third.

“The two days of sunshine made the event, with many parents staying to watch with picnics and younger siblings,” said Chatfield.

Sponsorship for the event was through Vickery Holman, while students from City College Plymouth ran the separate Shine Awards programme on the AstroTurf, in which more than 400 athletes took part.

Top city athlete Jess Burns presented the youngsters with their trophies.
