Admirals face Saxons on a high after Reading win

Friday, July 18, 2008, 21:18

PLYMOUTH Admirals take a trip into the unknown tomorrow as they take on Peterborough Saxons for the first time ever.

The Division Two East outfit visit Division Two West Admirals in a cross-conference clash at Parkway Sports and Social Club (2.30pm).

Plymouth are on a high after beating Reading Renegades 28-0 on the road last Sunday.

But coaches will warn their players not to get complacent.

Head coach Steve Perry, however, felt last Sunday's dominat performance could be a turning point for his team.

He said: “In the first half of the season we performed in fits and starts, particularly on offense.

“We looked very strong at times, but couldn't sustain that level for an entire match.

“Last Sunday was the first time we've maintained a high standard for a whole game.

“The offense continually moved the ball throughout and the defense was rock-solid all day long.

“But the Saxons are a strong team having a good season. They've never played the Admirals before so it will be a fresh experience for both teams.”

The Saxons currently hold second place in Division Two East with a record of 6-2 and amassing almost 300 points in the process.

Admirals' offensive co-ordinator Mark Tanner said: “The truth is the East is a strange conference.

“Three of the five teams there are weak, so it's hard to tell just how strong the Saxons really are.”

He added: “The best thing to do in such a situation is to prepare for a well-drilled, hard-hitting team.

“Underestimating your opponent is a terrible mistake and the squad won't be doing that.”

One of the touchdown heroes of last week, Michael Bearman, will be missing tomorrow due to a personal commitment while Ali Reade, Craig Holmes and Ross Parlour continue to be long-term absentees from the team.

On the plus side for Perry, lineman Ian Chown and Paul Brewer will return after missing last week.
