ALL-NEW ADMIRALS SHOW PROMISE IN WARRIORS SETBACK

Tuesday, June 10, 2008, 07:00

PLYMOUTH Admirals were just seven points short of ambushing divisional leaders South Wales Warriors on Sunday.

The revamped city American Football team went down 19-12 to Warriors in their South West Two clash at Parkway Sports and Social Club.

Their latest defeat leaves Admirals 1-3, but head coach Steve Perry said he was proud of the way his team had taken on the divisional leaders.

Perry said afterwards: “Obviously, you can never be too happy with a loss, but there are many aspects of the game that we can be very proud of.

“We put 12 points on a team that had let in only three points in their last two games.

“Several rookies and new players are progressing very well, and we've gelled in the last two weeks into a much stronger outfit.”

The game could not have started any better for the Admirals, who have not beaten Warriors for six years.

Rookie sensation Kyle Micallef added to his two touchdowns the previous week by returning the opening kick-off 85 yards for the game's opening score.

It was the first time the Welsh visitors had trailed in 2008 and they continued to struggle for the remainder of the first half.

A resolute Admirals defense gave up just two first downs before the break – one of which was as a result of a penalty against the home side.

The score remained 6-0 at the half, but the South Wales running game came to life in the third quarter.

Two rushing touchdowns, one converted, gave them a 13-7 lead going into the final period.

Plymouth's task got even harder early in the fourth quarter as Warriors scored again to open up a 19-6 lead with only minutes left.

Needing to score twice, the offense took to the field in a great position thanks to a 35-yard Nick Copley kick-off return.

An impressive drive, including a spectacular catch from new boy Tom Bornet, was capped when quarterback Rob Williams looped an 11-yard pass to veteran Tonie Browne for his first Admirals score.

Top-tackler Marco Pinder blocked a Warriors punt on the following drive, but it wasn't to be for the Admirals.

The city team now face local rivals, Newquay-based Cornish Sharks this Sunday

General Manager Sam Holder-Mark was keen to stress that the three-week break following the Sharks game as an excellent chance for new players to sign up.

He said: “We're still playing teams with bigger squads than us – this puts us at a disadvantage, particularly when you have several games in quick succession.

“Looking at our schedule this is exactly what we've got coming up, so the June 22, 29 and July 6 practice sessions are excellent chances to get involved.”
