Albion have mental edge over Welsh

GRAHAM DAWE believes the fact Plymouth Albion have already beaten London Welsh this season will be an advantage when the two teams meet at Brickfields today (3pm).

Eighth-placed Albion take on in-form Welsh who sit third and who have yet to lose this year.

The Exiles have won seven out of their last eight matches, including their last four, and have lost just six times in total this term.

However, while Albion enter today's encounter looking to avoid a third successive defeat, they did beat Welsh 26-12 at Old Deer Park on November 14.

Plymouth trailed 12-5 at the break, but a superb second half display saw them score three tries, each converted by Alex Davies, to seal a fine win.

"I am not sure you can say too much about what has happened in the past, because you can't stop the future," said Albion chairman of rugby Dawe (pictured top) .

"But the players certainly grew in stature during that game.

"The try just after half-time (by Keni Fisilau) was so important and led to us claiming an excellent win.

"I am sure London Welsh will be very keen to take a win away from our place.

"But the good thing is we know we can beat them and that should help us."

Today's match at Brickfields is Albion's last home clash of the regular league season.

They then face tough trips to Birmingham-Solihull and Doncaster as they bid to secure a top eight finish and a promotion play-offs place.

Albion have 37 points from their 19 matches – four adrift of Moseley in seventh and six clear of Rotherham in ninth, but who have a game in hand.

However, Plymouth have to also be wary of Doncaster who, despite being seven points behind the Brickfields outfit, have only played 16 matches.

With Albion's squad possessing limited experience of playing in the second tier of English rugby, does Dawe believe his players are equipped with the right qualities to cope with a fight to secure a promotion place?

"We will just have to wait and see," said Dawe.

"We will see how the players respond to (captain) Kyle Marriott today.

"But ultimately the players want to play for the supporters, the club and the city, and that will spur them on this weekend and for the matches beyond that.

"The players have done really well over the last few months and years, and we want to maintain some sort of reputation in the world of rugby."
