We have to start making our own luck, says Lewsey
Albion will feel they should have had two wins and a bonus point from their last three matches against London Welsh, Bristol and Nottingham. But instead, Albion have just a draw and a bonus point to their name.
"That's rugby," said Lewsey, who returned to the club from Launceston last month. "Margins are pretty small.
"Often games come down to the bounce of a ball or a couple of points here or there, but you have to create your own luck.
"We have been playing well for the last three weeks but, obviously, not well enough to win the games.
"But we are still in there (for the promotion play-offs), however, we need to win our last two games to be in the top eight.
"We were really disappointed on Saturday. We tried really hard to snatch the win.
"We got ourselves a lead and we defended so well.
"We had to defend a lot second half, but we did it manfully, only we could not quite hold them out with that last play.
"But I thought the endeavour of the team was excellent.
"We made a few mistakes in the second half when we could have relieved the pressure, but they are a quality side. I don't know how many phases we defended at the end but they probably kept the ball for at least 15 phases before they eventually scored."
Lewsey, who was making his first Albion start since returning to the club on loan from Polson Bridge, admitted the players were frustrated they did not get a penalty deep in Welsh's half in the second period after Ruairi Cushion had been fouled.
He said: "It is pretty gutting when Ruairi is taken out and the referee did not give us territory for the penalty.
"That would have put us on their 22 with a kick that could have won us the game.
"It is small margins like that.
"It's not the referee's fault, but that did not help us at all."
But Lewsey insists all the Albion players are still confident they can make the top eight.
He says the team has been encouraged by the performances against Welsh, Bristol and Nottingham.
"Plymouth have beaten Exeter and Bedford away and nobody in the squad doubts our ability to match the best teams in the league," said Lewsey.
"For 80 minutes we did that again on Saturday, but just could not keep them out to get the win.
"But two points is better than one, which is what we would have got had they got that conversion.
"So, I suppose we should be thankful for small mercies."
Lewsey's loan period is due to end after next Saturday's cup game against the Cornish Pirates.
But Lewsey admits it is not certain he will be returning to Polson Bridge.
"It is still up in the air," said Lewsey, who was needed to play scrum-half on Saturday after Cushion was carried off.
"Initially, it was for a month, but it could possibly be to the end of the season. I will see what Plymouth and Launceston say."
Meanwhile, Albion boss Graham Dawe likened Championship rugby matches this season to basketball games.
"So many games are now decided in the last five minutes that it is getting like the NBA," said Dawe, who has seen his team beat everyone in the top six apart from Bristol.
"There are no doubts we are a reasonable rugby team and we deserve to be in this league with our efforts and convictions.
"But for whatever reason we have not been good enough at certain things to get more wins.
And if you are not consistent with your play you are always at the mercy of clocks, decisions and conditions."
