ANGLINGNews from the sea and shore with Mike Millman

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 07:00

SO RARELY are ling caught from the shore I have only photographed three in 38 years in angling reporting.

The fourth opportunity was provided last weekend by Clive Wagner who caught a fish of 7lb 7oz in the Season Point area at the mouth of the Yealm estuary.

It took sandeel intended for a ray, set a club record for the Seafarers SAC, was worth 150 per cent of specimen, and will almost certainly gain a trophy or two.

It was at Season Point in 1994 that Kevin Smith of Roving Rods set the all-time British record with an immense fish of 21lb 10oz that may never have an equal.

Season Point has been a mark of considerable value throughout decades of fishing and is easily reached via the footpath from Wembury Church.

The final opportunity to enter this weekend's 12th National Flounder Championships and a tilt at £3,000 worth of prizes is tomorrow evening by cash only between 7pm and 10pm at the TSAS, River Beach Headquarters Teignmouth.

No entries will be taken on Saturday or Sunday.

The prize-giving will be on Sunday evening at Teignmouth's RNLI Lifeboat Station.

During the past week a number of sizeable flounder have been caught in the Flow Point, Red Rocks, and Coombe Cellars areas.

The only chance of success if you haven't got peeler crab is the River Beach above Cellars to the Pumping Station at Netherton and on to the road bridge where ragworm and pieces of king rag will catch.

The most likely area for the overall best specimen is Red Rocks reached via a path along the edge of fields that begins opposite the used car garage on the Teignmouth – Shaldon Road.

The Plymouth Federation of Sea Angling Clubs has expressed concern to the City Council over the condition of access to the shoreline at Rusty Anchor which is considered a health and safety hazard but no acknowledgement has yet been received.

Federation chairman Andy Rye said various courses of action could be taken, but is was agreed further representation would be made to the appropriate council department in the hope of obtaining at least a verbal response.

Club representatives who attended the latest committee meeting also discussed the issue of the acceptance and registration of fish caught from licensed boats and subsequently sold to assist in the defraying of costs, a long standing practise but one that falls outside National Federation of Sea Anglers acceptability.

Secretary Brian Dennis pointed out that any change in the present rules, on this or any other issue, could only be made following discussion and approval at an annual general meeting and, therefore, the issue was left for the moment.

Dave Horrill's outstanding blonde ray of 26lb 1oz that set a new regional record in the shore category won the senior Fish of the Month award. Scoring 217.87 per cent it will almost certainly be the overall best specimen of 2008.

The Plymouth SAC member's great catch replaces Adam Nicholls' specimen of 24½lb caught in 2003.

Joe Hobbs of Pot Black won the boat category with a grey mullet of 4lb 8oz (100 per cent) and the junior section was topped by James Eden of Rodbenders SAC who had a black bream of 3lb 5oz (110.410 per cent).

Heat eight of the Shore League will be fished this weekend and, unfortunately, clashes with the National Flounder Championship.

Saturday presents no problem but on Sunday, it will be necessary to be at the scales as soon as they open in order to get back to Plymouth for the weigh-in.

If you have a flounder that is a prize-winning candidate inform the championship organisers that you will not be attending the prize-giving, expected to start at 7pm.
