Angling round-up

Tuesday, September 30, 2008, 18:45

THE round trip of 200 miles from Plymouth to Dorset's Chesil Beach certainly paid off for Plymouth rod Chris Tozer. A super plaice of 4lb 4oz, one of the heaviest of the year, took his bait lobbed into deep water from the steep shelving pebbles.

A flattie of this quality is now quite unusual and rarely matched in the boat category.

It is unlikely that we will ever again encounter the likes of the Wyvern Division's record plaice of 7lb 9oz, caught in 1973.

The Skerries Banks have however, been showing a reasonable level of form for specimen weight fish and the heaviest in the recent Torbay Festival, a specimen of 4lb 13oz 4 drams.

The Plymouth Federation of Sea Angling Clubs Fish of the Month awards were well won by Gary Andrews of Roving Rods, who topped the shore category with a blonde ray of 18lb 3oz (151.56 per cent).

David Murray of the Rodbenders had a wreck pollack of 16lb 14oz off the boat section and a 16lb 3oz fish provided James Eden of the Rodbenders with the junior award.

At the organisation's recent meeting, it was stated that the Torbay Trust, owners of Berry Head, were considering closing it to anglers because of litter and allegations of unsociable behaviour.

There is of course, no suggestion that Plymouth anglers are involved in this distasteful situation, but all must be aware of the possibility of what would be a catastrophic loss to shore angling.

The Federation is seeking a weigh-master to replace Wayne Clements, who is standing down at the end of this year.

It hopes that a successor can be identified without delay so that a smooth hand-over may be effected.

It is a very tight situation for the Boat Championship of Cornwall, under the banner of the Cornish Federation of Sea Anglers.

Bob Pollard of Looe SAA leads with a 10 species score of 1024.579 per cent. Mike Ivey of the same club is in runner up position with 912 per cent and Jon Hall has fourth place with 853 per cent.

Pollard has registered a black bream of 4-0-8 and Ivey the heaviest conger, a good fish of 57-12-3.

Clive's Tackle is running an Any Species Cash Back event throughout October.

The entry fee is £10 and fish must be weighed within opening hours at the Exeter Street shop.

The Christmas Fayre Match is scheduled for December 7 and will again be on a 'roving' basis.

The National Federation of Sea Anglers appears to have gone into some form of hibernation as it is now almost three months since it has communicated with its clubs, individual members and the angling press.

David Rowe's retirement from the Development Officer role, he held for two decades, has clearly left a serious void in the organisation.

Unless its public relations is dramatically improved, anglers will be reluctant to pay the upgraded membership fee of £26.

There has been no further update on the Angling Unity proposal that aims to bring five major freshwater organisations and the NFSA within a single body.

In its present form, the NFSA will simply be swamped and could disappear from British saltwater angling.
