Not for us to argue
I HAD a little titter after reading Valerie Fry's letter (Tuesday) inviting us all to become vegans.
Sadly will not be taking up Mss Fry's offer for a number of reasons. Every day I look in the mirror and gleaming back at me (well they used to gleam ) are a nice pair of Mark 1 omnivorous nashers. Yes my teeth are telling me I'm designed to eat both plant and meat, as does the rest of my body. We are made for it.
Valerie claims the 'organic' tags etc are made to assuage our guilt. I don't care what the intent is, as long as the animals benefit with a better quality of life. You see I love animals, both domestic and wild, and have had involvement in marine conservation among other things. I abhor cruelty to animals and would demand that all animals, domesticated and wild, receive the highest respect and care. However that does not mean I will refrain from eating them. I think it is true we should be eating less meat, but to cut it out completely would be against the will of nature itself, in my opinion.
There are many predators in the animal kingdom, we are but one.

Eating meat is entirely moral; how it is kept is another matter and while we have seen some improvements I feel much, much more needs to be done. If that means buying a chicken for £10, so be it. Then we need to have it on special occasions and the same can be said of all other livestock and fish.
I find Ms Fry's stance extreme, but good luck to her. However I intend to tuck into a nice juicy steak this weekend, and I can safely say will feel nothing but pleasure at the fantastic flavours I will be enjoying.
We are omnivores, we were built to eat plant and meat – this is what nature intended for us and it is not for me to argue with Mother Nature.

“"If people want to be vegans they should be forced to live in Totnes. "
"FIREFIGHTERS! GRRRRR! Although on the subject of Firemen, I think this proves the saying, the bigger the firetruck the smaller the tool. Such a disappointment for a girl. I wonder if any of them drive a Subaru?"
"This scheme may also have the benefit of shaming posh people into drinking less wine. "
"Why on earth would anyone want to be a collector of surf boards? ...who can enlighten me as to this unusual, and dare I say, completely pointless hobby?"

“There's a health article on page 48 of the Daily Mail 28th Aug entitled- "My doctors orders? Crisps, doughnuts and strictly no veg!"
Apparently she's got bowel problems and veg makes them worse.”

“Clearly you are trying to make some point or you wouldn't be posting. I'm sure you can selectively quote many different things but if someone said a cannibalistic diet was the best for a human, would you?
Really there is no 'best' diet. If a diet provides everything that is required then it is fine. If it doesn't then it's deficient. I bet you there are more kids with an inappropriate diet of meat eating parents than vegetarian :)”

“Tim said- 'If you're trying to imply that anyone who feeds their child a solely vegetarian diet couldn't be meeting their dietary needs, you are incorrect"..
I'm not trying to imply anything Jack, i simply pointed out what an expert said-
"A balanced vegetable and meat diet is best for humans' -Dr. Mike Stroud (Senior Lecturer in Medicine, Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Southampton University)”

“It's not a club, there are many different types of vegetarian and vegan. Some for moral reasons, others for dietary reasons, for some it's just a preference. Some say they are vegetarian but aren't, eg fish eaters. I've never met anyone who was vegetarian for moral reasons who kept a cat, so the question is moot. Most parents raise their kids according to their own moral standards. If you're trying to imply that anyone who feeds their child a solely vegetarian diet couldn't be meeting their dietary needs, you are incorrect.”

“..Tim said- 'I haven't seen anyone advocate keeping a cat on a meat free diet on this website'..
Hopefully our veggie friends will clear up the question and tell us whether they feed meat-free stuff to their pets and kids?”

“As has been said before, humans are omnivores but cats are obligate carnivores. I haven't seen anyone advocate keeping a cat on a meat free diet on this website, so I'm not sure who you are arguing with?”

“Tim said-"Charlie why are you obsessed with that?"..
Obsessed with what mate? Veggies started this thread not me..:)
Sure i'm concerned that veggies are being cruel to their dogs and cats by feeding them meat-free veggie pet food, and I daresay they're also forcing a meat-free diet on their kids, even though experts say dogs, cats and humans should always have meat in their meals.”
