Edworthy to make bow for Greens Legends in charity match

Wednesday, October 14, 2009, 07:00

MARC EDWORTHY has been lined up to make his Plymouth Argyle Legends debut later this month.

The former Pilgrims' defender, aged 36, will play in a game against a Hector Christie XI at Appledore FC on Sunday, October 25 (2pm).

Edworthy, who played twice for League Two club Burton Albion earlier this season, was born in north Devon and started his career at Argyle.

He made a total of 83 appearances before being sold to Crystal Palace in June 1995.

Goalkeeper Peta Balac, 55, is also set to make his debut for Argyle Legends against the Hector Christie XI.

Balac played 41 times for the Pilgrims in the early 1970s before moving to South Africa.

Christie played semi-professional football in north Devon for many years.

All proceeds from the game against Argyle Legends will go to Christie's favourite charity, which aims to keep GM crops out of the United Kingdom.

Christie's XI will include former Leeds United, Liverpool and Scotland midfielder Gary McAllister.

Former long-serving Torquay United defender Kevin Hill will also line-up against Argyle Legends.

The match will take place at Marshford, the home ground of Appledore.

Admission will cost £5 for adults and £2 for senior citizens and under-16s.

Former Argyle manager John Hore, who was also Christie's boss at Torrington, will be attending the game.

Paul Hart, the secretary of Argyle Legends, is hoping to run a coach to take the team to Appledore, provided he can get 20 people to go along and watch.

Hart said: "The coach would leave Home Park at 10.45am, arriving back in Plymouth at approximately 7.30pm.

"The fare will be £20 per person or £17.50 for Argyle Legends members. This includes the match entrance fee.

"This is a unique opportunity to travel with the Legends team and meet former heroes."
