Gallery reopens with 'subtle but powerful' show

New Street Gallery on the Barbican is back with Journey, an exhibition of powerful but subtle abstracts by Diane Nevitt.
The reopening, 22 years after the gallery's first show, comes at a difficult time as Britain heads into recession.
But gallery owner Francis Mallet says he feels the time is right for a new exhibition.
He said: "We have a refurbished building, whose space cries out to be used.
"Also it seems to me that Plymouth and the Barbican in particular needs a gallery of this kind, especially during these difficult economic times which do seem to me to present a more interesting atmosphere for the arts."
The Diane Nevitt show runs from November 24 to December 20 and coincides with the launch of the book of the same title, covering her work since 1996.
"I'm especially pleased with this book as Diane's subtle and poetic colours are a particularly tough challenge to reproduce accurately," said Mr Mallet.
The first exhibition of 2009 will include paintings by Mary Stork and Fred Yates – who have both died in the last couple of years – as well as other New Street regulars such as Derek Holland, Bryan Pearce, Robert Lenkiewicz and Ben Hartley.
The gallery is open Mondays to Fridays 10am-4pm and Saturdays 10am-noon. For more details contact the gallery on 01752 221450 or visit www.whitelanepress.co.uk.
