Sunny show will have you doing the Lambeth Walk

Friday, November 21, 2008, 14:30

ONE of the many hit numbers in this show is The Sun Has Got His Hat On. And this is indeed the sunniest musical you could wish for in the current miserable weather and economic climate.

Never mind that it's a nostalgic trip into a world that never really existed except in the imagination. Forget that it drips with class snobbery and cocks a snook at political correctness. Just enjoy.

For what it's worth, the romantic rages-to-riches narrative centres on cheeky Lambeth lad Bill Snibson, unexpectedly discovered to be the rightful heir to the Earl of Hareford. That revelation throws everything and everyone into a whirl of confusion.

Can the aristocrats buff him up to scratch with even a tiny modicum of upper class polish? Can they get him to dump his Lambeth sweetheart Sally and marry Lady Jacqueline? And is there ever any doubt that there'll be a happy ending with three weddings? The British music hall lives on here, with slapstick and broad comedy (don't waste your time looking for sophistication), plus touches of pathos and sentimentality.

The combination of Rob Tremaine's direction, choreography by Peter Agnew, Kate Brooks and Jo Stewart, Noel Gay's songs under the musical direction of Trefor Farrow and some attractive sets, result in a fun and frothy evening.

There are ceaselessly exuberant and committed portrayals from the large cast, confidently headed by Brantley Rogers and Thaila Kelly, a genuinely affectionate pairing, as the ingenuous Bill and selfless Sally. Alice Dalrymple is formidable as the Duchess and the vamping Jemma Aldersley is the gold-digging Jackie eventually brought to her senses by a sharp slap on the rump. Much comedy is provided by Richard Brindley as the wily Sir John, Tony Outterside as the discarded Gerald, and Elliott Coombe, flamboyant as family solicitor Parchester.

Step out of the theatre with a huge grin on your face, and do the Lambeth Walk on your way home.
