Youngsters put on slick show

One of the pleasing things about this production is the lack of references to television programmes. The humour arises from the story, and the company is surprisingly adept at playing the sight gags.
Barrie describes Peter Pan as a beautiful boy with a beautiful smile, and Connie Veale's lovely smile helps her to find the character of the boy who never wants to grow up. Following her willingly to Neverland is Wendy, a practical and motherly characterisation from Sophie Glibbery, and the petulant Tinkerbell (Helen Netting) shows her displeasure by blowing raspberries.
Alistair Mason as Smee and Kiera Funnell as Noodler are a slick double act and 'play' the audience with great skill.
Captain Hook is urbane and stylish and doesn't roll his eyes or his rrrs – an excellent performance from Alice Ward. The sparkly mermaids, more Lilo Lil' than Lorelei, play their scenes with assurance ,and the antics of the Lost Boys, swashbuckling Pirates and brave Indians were appreciated by the enthusiastic audience.
Director Wendy Holmes has inspired these young people to give their best, and they clearly enjoyed the experience. The set and costumes are full of traditional pantomime colour and glitter, and the Jolly Roger looks quite seaworthy! Musical Director Matthew Oakes draws confident singing from the chorus, and as always the pupils of Lipson Community College give meticulous attention to the smooth running of the show, both backstage and Front-of-House.
