Harvey girls start term in fine form

Thursday, October 30, 2008, 07:00

THE Harvey girls – Jo and Jess – both claimed top-five finishes at the season-opening Birmingham Cross Country Challenge.

Elder sister Jo secured second place in the under-20s category over the energy-sapping Senneleys Park course.

Ivybridge Community College's Jess had earlier underlined her promise by marking her debut with fifth place in the under-15s category at the English Cross Country Assocation event.

Great Britain international and former Ivybridge CC student Jo completed the 4km course in a time of 13minutes 29seconds, in the colours of Exeter Harriers.

Harvey was sandwiched by University of Birmingham athletes – winner Sara Treacy (13:26) and bronze medal-placed Lauren Howarth (13:41).

City of Plymouth AC's talented 17-year-old Jess Burns was fifth in the under-20s in a time of 14minutes two seconds.

Erme Valley Harrier Jess completed the 3km course in 11:58, in a race in which the first five were well clear of their competitors.

The under-15s event was won by Thurrock's Jessica Rudd (11:26) ahead of Woking's Georgina Peel (11:34), with Rugby and Northampton's Charlotte Inwood taking the final podium place (11:39).

Amber Watson of Gloucester AC (11:45) was fourth.

Jess admitted she had returned from the Birmingham event both delighted and greatly encouraged for the remainder of the series.

She said: "I'm really pleased with my performance, particularly at coming fifth against the best athletes in my age group.

"It was my first time in the UK Challenge series and also at this level of competition.

"I'd not done an awful lot of training over the summer in preparation, so I didn't even know how fit I'd be.

"Senneleys Park is quite challenging with just enough hills to test you.

"It also allows for a fast finish which there was in my race. I'm very happy and now looking forward to competing at Parliament Hill Fields – the next event in the series."

Jess is a member of the rapidly-expanding 'Young and Talented' group of athletes at Ivybridge CC.

The group is the brainchild of the college's Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning weightlifter, and PE teacher Michaela Breeze, who competed at this year's Olympics.

Jo Harvey, Jess Burns and Michaela Breeze are all finalists at this year's Herald Sports Personality awards at the Pavilions on Monday, December 1.

Harvey and Breeze are nominated in the Amateur Sports Personality category, while Plymstock School student Burns is shortlisted in the Young Sports Personality section.
