THIS year has been the "best year yet" for cycling in Plymouth, a city councillor said.

Cllr Mark Coker celebrated the success of the sport as he was presented a Team GB jersey by British Cycling, an organisation who have teamed up with Plymouth City Council.

The two bodies will work together to create a range of cycling initiatives, events and cycling groups to further interest in the popular sport.

"This year has been the best yet for cycling in Plymouth and there have been many events which thousands have enjoyed," said Cllr Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport.

"Working in partnership with organisations like British Cycling has helped this to happen and I hope will continue for many years to come.

"It's not every day the council receives a Team GB jersey and I will ensure we find the perfect place for it to be seen."

During this year Sky Ride Plymouth saw families taking part in free bike rides for people of all abilities and many got involved with The Breeze Network, a social network for cyclists where people can hook up, share routes and make friends.

Brian Johnston, recreation manager for Plymouth, said: "It's been a fantastic summer of cycling in Plymouth. PCC has played a fantastic role in creating a lasting cycling legacy for the local community."

A spokesperson for British Cycling, the national governing body for the sport, said the group were "proud" to partner with PCC.

“Tell that to the cyclists killed or injured on the roads this year.”
