Hundreds of people braved the blustery conditions to form the shape of a giant Breast Cancer Care ribbon at the Armada Way Piazza.
Thousands more poured through the doors of Drake Circus shopping centre, where beauty and clothing workshops, fashion shows and music had been planned.
Project Pink was organised by Soroptimist International Plymouth & District to raise awareness about breast cancer.
Survivors of the disease were among a group of people treated to fashion and beauty make-overs performed by London-based celebrity stylist Patrick Swan.
Other models included the winners of a Plymouth Sound make-over competition who had their hair and make-up transformed.
A glittering catwalk was set up in the heart of the shopping centre where students from Plymouth College of Art & Design opened the event with a funky fashion show.
Then, every hour, Patrick Swan got to work on his models, showing how to transform an outfit on a budget and how to create a new look for autumn/winter using the latest hair and make-up trends.
Other attractions on the day included a performance by Plymouth's Neil Diamond impersonator Michael Douglas, the Mayflower Barbershop Ladies Chorus, singer/musician Hannah Partridge and a belly dancing demonstration by Shashara.
Health professionals from the city's cancer support services were also on hand to offer advice and information.
Sylvia Bedbrook, chair of the Project Pink organising committee, said: "The day was absolutely brilliant and such fun.
"If we have persuaded one person to get early detection it will have been worthwhile and we will have made a difference."
She said the project would not have been possible without the support of sponsors including Ocean Mini, Babcock Marine, MacMillan Nursery, Medical Clerical Bureau, Peninsula Medical School, Plymouth Primary Care Trust Public Health and PDS Print.
