BOWLS ROUND-UP
Saturday, September 13, 2008, 10:00
It was a must-win game for North Down, but playing Plymstock was never going to be easy as both teams have been keen rivals for many years. Plymstock won 120-113, with the rink of Gareth Grimshaw, which won 40-19 the pick of their rinks.
New Plymouth got back to winning ways when they beat City Bus 140-114 at Central Park. They now have one game remaining and winning it will ensure they will at least finish runners up, but it is against North Down so it will not be easy.
City Bus still need a win from one of their last three games to make sure of staying up, but two of them are against CSBC, who are now favourites for the title.
The bottom two teams, Torpoint and Beacon Down, met at Torpoint and Beacon Down gave themselves a glimmer of hope as they came away with a comfortable 149-101 victory which finally sends Torpoint down to Division Two.
Beacon Down, meanwhile, are looking for large slices of help from other teams.
Division Two leaders Police entertained Tamar on the Hoe looking for two more points, that, barring catastrophic results, would ensure promotion. They were not to be denied by an out of sorts Tamar who were in no mood to upset the leaders and were beaten 116-9. Tamar now appear destined to spend another year in Division Two.
Mount Gold kept up their promotion bid, beating Dean Cross 126-77 and have closed the gap on Ivybridge to just one point. But there may be a few surprises left before the second promotion place is decided. Dean Cross are now second bottom and looking nervously at the trap door.
Yealmpton sent PP Olympic down to Division Three in a close game which finished 103-99.
Yealmpton will now feel they have enough points to stay up and they have had a good end to the season.
Devonport Park, who have led Division Three all season, almost certainly gained promotion last week with a win over City of Plymouth by 122-104 and realistically one more win will secure them the title.
Peverell Park could in theory still overhaul the leaders, but their nerves were jangling a bit last Saturday as they just managed to fight off a depleted Oreston side by 105-104.
Both the Parks, Devonport and Peverell, were indebted to Sir Francis Drake (B) who beat Tothill 130-108, which dented Tothill's ambitions somewhat and kept SFD hopes barely alive.
SFD held a comfortable 35-shot lead at tea, but Tothill, trying desperately to get something out of the game, narrowed the gap a little.
SFD were well served by the rinks of Sam Brown, 40-18, and Ian Carmichael, 44-21, who were the big winners on the day.
Lee Moor and Unity Park had an interesting game as they fought out a 97-97 draw at Lee Moor. Unity Park remain in mid-table, while Lee Moor move out of the bottom two, one point clear of Oreston.
The Police National Championships held at the Sir Francis Drake BC last week turned out to be a resounding success.
As expected, SFD hosted the tournament superbly and the three-day event attracted many spectators from clubs in and around the Plymouth area who were well pleased with the standard of bowls played.
For the record, Scotland won the singles, while Northern Ireland went away with the pairs title.
The Plymouth Area Police BC have been celebrating their 50th anniversary this week and a celebratory match was played on Wednesday against Devon County, kindly hosted by Plympton BC as the Police Green on the Hoe was unavailable. In a very friendly and convivial atmosphere Devon County won 113-101, but the result was secondary to the occasion.
THERE was no joy for Plymouth Area Bowlers in the County Finals at Newton Abbot last weekend.
Phil Riley of Plymstock lost to Joe Melmore of Kings BC (Torquay) 21-14 in the Under-40s Singles, while John Kelly of CSBC, seeking to win the Secretaries' and Treasurers' singles title for the sixth time, lost 21-13 to Peter Churchman of Great Torrington.
Neil Hamlyn (North Down) could not play the County Singles final against Sam Tolchard of Kings Torquay as Tolchard was away on England International duty and a new date will be arranged.
CSBC will play their County Trophy semi-final against Exmouth Madeira tomorrow at 10am in Barnstaple and if successful the final will be at 2pm.
