CSBC hold off late Plymouth charge
Saturday, September 06, 2008, 07:00
THE top game in Division One was the clash between leaders New Plymouth and their main title rivals CSBC last weekend.
It turned out to be an exciting game with CSBC holding off a late New Plymouth charge for victory.
CSBC held a comfortable 22-shot lead at tea, but with only a few ends to go New Plymouth had not only clawed them all back, but were a couple of shots to the good.
CSBC were not to be denied, however, and on the last end went on to win by four shots.
Sir Francis Drake (A) benefited from New Plymouth's defeat when they beat Torpoint 148-91, which takes them back to the top of the table.
The rink of David Cutler played particularly well and was 48-23 up on the day.
SFD could still pinch the title if results go their way.
North Down kept up the chase and are fourth after beating Beacon Down 133-101 – but must keep winning to retain their title.
In Division Two the surprise result of the week was leaders Police losing to Yealmpton by 116-115.
It put the brake on the Police promotion push, but two wins out of their last three games will see them promoted.
For Yealmpton it was an almost a perfect weekend as they completed a fine double by beating Saltash 129-126 in another close game.
But a loss to Dean Cross, 91-70, could still come back to haunt them if they fail to stay up.
The win keeps Dean Cross's hopes alive of avoiding relegation.
In second spot, Mount Gold will be kicking themselves.
After waiting for the Police to drop points, they then went to Saltash and lost 122-96 to drop to third.
The main beneficiaries were Ivybridge, who in a double header against Dean Cross won both games and jumped to second position.
Saltash have done their chances of staying up a power of good with two wins out of three.
Losing to Yealmpton was a blow while beating Mount Gold was a bonus – but the icing on the cake was a win against relegation rivals PP Olympic 129-91.
The rink of Lou Abbott had a good day, finishing 42-15 up. And Olympic look doomed.
Division Three leaders Devonport Park strengthened their grip at the top with two convincing wins over Unity Park 124-101 and Lee Moor 95-80.
Peverell Park, in second spot, beat Lee Moor 120-91.
It will be interesting to see who will be promoted as Tothill picked up four points with wins over Unity Park and Stuart Road – and with the top three all still having to face each other, it's all to play for.
But Sir Francis Drake (B) now look out of it after losing to City of Plymouth 153-107.
In the Farley Trophy, holders North Down deprived CSBC of a chance to win all of the domestic trophies when they beat them in the final 4-1 at Central Park.
COUNTY BOWLS
NEIL HAMLYN (North Down) bids this weekend to beat Sam Tolchard, the newly crowned English singles champion from Kings BC of Torquay, at the County Finals in Newton Abbot.
Hamlyn knows only too well how difficult a task it will be, but is philosophical about his chances.
Plymouth Sir Francis Drake have qualified for the County Top Club semi-finals after beating Plymouth City Bus in the quarter-finals.
City Bus looked likely winners at halfway in the five-rink event, but SFD came back strongly to snatch an improbable victory 3-2.
The pivotal game was the pairs where Toman and Spreadborough (SFD) came from 18-10 down after 16 ends to win 22-19 against Benner and Chaffe (City Bus).
The finals will be played at Madeira BC, Exmouth, on September 21.
CSBC again have reached the semi-finals of the County Trophy after beating North Down by 32 shots.
CSBC, who have won the Trophy three times in the last five years and are the holders, were always in command, winning on all four rinks and eased through to the finals in Barnstaple on September 24.
