Mount Gold reap rewards for braving rain

Saturday, August 23, 2008, 07:00

PLYMOUTH & DISTRICT BOWLS LEAGUE

MOUNT Gold braved atrocious conditions last weekend to play their game against Ivybridge and were rewarded with a fine 141-91 win, to close the gap on the Police in Division Two.

The wet weather obviously suited the rink of Mount Gold's Roger Hore, who returned a winning scorecard of 56-10, the highest of the season.

With the backlog of games getting longer, teams are using Sundays and midweek evenings to catch-up.

Elsewhere in Division Two there have been wins for Saltash against Tamar 93-78, while Plympton overcame PP Olympic 116-100.

In Division Three Sir Francis Drake (B) kept up their promotion hopes by beating Unity Park 116-96.

COUNTY BOWLS

PLYMOUTH'S only representative in the National Finals at Worthing, North Down's Neil Hamlyn lost in the third round of the singles.

Hamlyn played Jim Paveling, of the North London BC in the preliminary round, winning comfortably 21-12.

Hamlyn's next game in the first round was more difficult against Charlie Bailey from Fareham BC (Hampshire).

He edged out his opponent 21-20.

In the second round Hamlyn met Matthew Copping from Royston BC (Hertfordshire) and won 21-17.

In the third round Hamlyn was up against top England international Simon Skelton from Stute BC (Derbyshire) and was comprehensively beaten 21-3.

But Hamlyn will be pleased to have reached the last 16 and was not disgraced.

Plymouth City Bus have reached the latter stages of two of Devon's top competitions, the Foxlands and the County Top Club.

This is a marvellous achievement for a club only promoted to Division One of the P&D Saturday League this season.

They have put Plymouth's traditional top sides in the shade, and last weekend played Seaton in the quarter-finals of the two rink Foxlands.

In difficult conditions City Bus won on both rinks – the away rink of Roy Chaffe, Michael Nail, Gregg May and Malcolm Griffin winning 26-7, while, the home rink of Fred West, Derek McFarlane, John Dickson and Dave Swindell prevailed 24-16. City Bus play Barnstable in the semi-finals on Monday (2pm).

This morning City Bus play Sir Francis Drake in the quarter-finals of the County Top Club (10am). Tomorrow, Plymouth Section Seven play in the semi-finals of the County Coronation Cup at Paignton (10am) with the winners contesting the final later in Torquay (2pm).
