New Plymouth end North Down title defence

Friday, September 19, 2008, 18:21

PLYMOUTH & DISTRICT BOWLS LEAGUE

NEW Plymouth ended North Down's defence of the Division One title when they beat last year's champions 120-113 at Unity Park.

The result keeps New Plymouth's own title hopes alive – but this was their last game and they can do no more than wait and see whether CSBC win two of their remaining three games, which would be enough to clinch the title.

CSBC overcame a potential banana skin when they beat local rivals City Bus 131-116.

Both teams found conditions tricky at Milehouse, but in a generally tight game CSBC just prevailed.

Plymstock continued their good form with a 128-104 victory over relegated Torpoint, but Plymstock owed a big thank-you to Andrew Hibbitt's rink, which came away a massive 48-9 up – and losing only nine shots in 32 ends is some going.

In Division Two, Ivybridge are determined to make the Police fight all the way for the title.

Last Saturday, they overcame Yealmpton 124-120 and closed the gap behind Police to one point.

Tamar's season has petered out, and they lost to Saltash 134-102.

Saltash are fighting to stay up and are doing a good job of it. One more win should see them survive.

They were well served by the rink of Lou Abbot, who finished 45-14 up.

The two teams destined for relegation, Dean Cross and PP Olympic met at Plymstock, and it was already-relegated Olympic who came out on top, 122-114,

Dean Cross need to win one of their last two games to have a chance of staying up.

In Division Three the game of the day was at Central Park where the top two, Devonport Park and Peverell Park, met.

In a close game, Devonport came out on top 118-110 and go up as champions.

It was nice to see Stuart Road get their second win of the season against Lee Moor 115-85. The rink of Norman Marks was particularly impressive, winning 37-16.
