New Plymouth leading the way as normal service is restored

Saturday, August 30, 2008, 10:00

NORMAL service has been restored as the weather has relented a little and bowlers have returned to the greens.

In Division One of the Plymouth and District Bowls League, New Plymouth lead the way after beating Torpoint last Friday in a reduced 24-end game 95-66.

The weekend did not get any better for Torpoint, who last Saturday lost 123-109 to bottom club Beacon Down, which almost seals their fate and a return to Division Two.

For Beacon Down it is a lifeline – albeit a tenuous one as they still have a lot to do to survive.

At the top, any one of four teams can still win the title.

New Plymouth and CSBC are favourites and meet today at Central Park. Whoever wins will be in a strong position.

In Division Two, the Police are out in front and will take some catching now.

Last Saturday they played second placed Mount Gold on the Hoe and came out winners 111-101.

In an entertaining game, the Police were stronger in the early exchanges and managed to open up a lead of 25 shots at tea.

However, Mount Gold came out full of fight for the second half and managed to cut the deficit to seven shots.

Going into the last quarter, Mount Gold actually went in front but a strong finish from the men in blue saw them home by 10 shots and a little closer to Division One.

With Mount Gold losing, Tamar closed the gap on second place to one point when they beat Dean Cross 138-98.

Shot-difference will be in their favour if it comes down to it.

Ivybridge cannot be discounted after a 123-113 win over Saltash, who had given themselves a chance of avoiding relegation with some good results of late. But this loss will be a big setback for them.

Plympton eased their relegation worries by beating PP Olympic 135-107 and are now four points clear of the battle for survival.

For Olympic, things do not look good as they are bottom and will need to win two of their last three to stay up.

There was not a lot of action in Division Three with the top two sidelined.

Peverell Park had the chance to close the gap and they did it by beating bottom club Stuart Road 130-101. They are now level on points with Sir Francis Drake (B) but have two vital games in hand.

Lee Moor had a good win away to Oreston 127-115 and will be looking to overhaul them in the closing weeks.

Unity Park were celebrating last week and not just because of their 129-117 win over City of Plymouth.

On Sunday, Unity's ladies' section celebrated its 25th anniversary and many bowlers from the Plymouth area turned up along with founder members to join in the celebrations and enjoy an afternoon of friendly bowls.

Captain Sue Young, who welcomed everyone, proposed a toast and helped cut the celebration cake. A raffle was held with the proceeds going to the Children's Hospice South West.

Alan McArdle, one of Devon's leading disabled bowlers has died.

McArdle represented the disabled England team on many occasions, but his work with disabled bowlers at the Mayflower Centre is what he will be remembered for most.

McArdle was an integral part of the Plymouth Indoor Bowling club and chairman of the disabled section.

He frequently attended Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire, teaching young people to bowl.

As a bowler McArdle's ability was such that he was more than capable of holding his own against more able bodied bowlers and represented the Plymouth Indoor Bowling Club in various competitions.

He will be sadly missed by all bowlers in the Plymouth area.
