Police win to strengthen their grip on Division Two

Saturday, August 16, 2008, 08:01

WITH the weather again playing havoc with the fixtures, there was very little bowls played last weekend as the rains poured down.

But two brave teams did take to the greens and, incredibly, managed to finish.

In Division Two, Police played Plympton and the lawmen provisionally won 139-98.

But because the scorecards were unreadable by the time they finished the exact score has still to be ratified by the league secretary.

The win was another big step for the Police as they strengthened their grip on Division Two. It is good to know the local Police Force will turn out no matter what the weather conditions are.

The Police National Finals are being held at the Sir Francis Drake BC this year – the first time Plymouth has hosted the event.

The competition, which is for singles and pairs, will be played over three days on September 2-4 and there should be some very good bowls played. Visitors are most welcome.

While Division One was wiped out on Saturday, on Monday CSBC played Torpoint in a rearranged game over 24 ends.

CSBC duly won but Torpoint made life uncomfortable for the home side for much of the game before going down 107-81.

CSBC were thankful to the rink of Paul Bailey up 39-13 on the night.

The Ladies' League is at a very interesting stage in the season as three teams are still in with a shout of winning Division One.

Plymstock Birds are in pole position on 63 points – just one point ahead of last year's champions Sir Francis Drake.

In third spot on 57 points come CityBus Ladies, but they will need help from the first two if they are to clinch the title.

Division Two is also boiling up quite nicely with four teams all in with a chance of promotion and the title.

Plympton Woods are setting the pace on 70 points with Bere Alston in second on 59.

But Bere Alston have three games in hand and with six points a game up for grabs they could overtake the leaders.

Elizabethans come third, also on 59 points, but they have one game in hand on the leaders. In fourth spot is the other Plympton team, the Hares, who have 54 points but also have a crucial three games in hand of the Woods.

PLYMOUTH area Section Seven beat Section Three last Sunday at Honiton to qualify for the semi-finals of the Coronation Cup.

Section Seven were up on four rinks and down in two with the Rink of David Cutler (Sir Francis Drake) being particularly impressive.

The semi-finals will be played on Sunday, August 24th at Paignton (10am) with the final at Kings BC Torquay at 2pm.
