Wins take New Plymouth to the top

Saturday, August 02, 2008, 07:00

P&D LEAGUE

NEW Plymouth jumped to the top of Division One on the back of two good wins.

Last Saturday they went to Milehouse for what should have been a difficult game against City Bus – but after racking up a 50-14 first quarter lead everything was downhill after that.

City Bus did stage a revival after tea but it was too little too late as New Plymouth ran out comfortable winners 133-108.

On Monday New Plymouth entertained Plymstock to play the last 24 ends of an earlier rain-interrupted game.

In an emotionally-charged game, New Plymouth won 118-116, helped by a full house of eight shots on one end for Chris Lynch's rink against Dave Hopper's Rink.

New Plymouth are now four points clear of their main challengers, CSBC and New Plymouth, who cannot afford any slip ups.

Sir Francis Drake (A) are still second after beating Beacon Down 121-110.

Beacon Down, after this loss, will need to win half of their remaining games to avoid relegation.

In Division Two, the Police are looking more and more like the real deal.

They gained a big away win, 113-110 at Saltash, who had been on the up prior.

Tamar jumped into second spot after a narrow win away to Yealmpton – but 117-112 was not convincing against a side facing relegation.

Their blushes were only saved by the rink of Martyn Cole, who, with a 43-13 winning scorecard, was Tamar's only winning rink.

Ivybridge remain fourth after a good win away to PP Olympic at Central Park 143-100, which eases them a precious two points away from the danger area.

Plympton went down once more on their home green, 139-106 to visiting Dean Cross, who were bottom prior.

It was a fine fighting display from the Plymstock side, who moved up to third bottom and have given themselves a fighting chance of survival.

Two of the title contenders in Division Three met on The Hoe when third-placed City of Plymouth met leaders Devonport Park – and it was the leaders who gained the upper hand in another tight game 115-110.

It was City of Plymouth's second defeat on the trot and drops them to fourth.

Sir Francis Drake (B), in second position, notched up another fine win, 123-94 against Oreston at Whiteford Road.

Tothill moved up to third but not before they had a scare at Tothill Park against lowly Lee Moor in the most exciting game of the weekend. Tothill edged it 121-120.

Due to the bad weather the Farley Trophy final between CSBC and North Down at Whiteford Road on Thursday night was postponed. A new date will be announced shortly.

COUNTY BOWLS

THE ladies' national finals at Leamington have not been kind to Plymouth bowlers.

Both Sharron Parnell (City Bus) and Mary Player (Plymstock) made early exits in the Two Wood Singles competition.

Player won her first round match, 16-9 against Helen Prince of Kent, but then came up against a tough opponent in Jayne Croxall of Nottinghamshire and lost 15-7.

England international Parnell also had a convincing first-round win, 15-6 against England team-mate Helen Wall from Derbyshire – but in round two Parnell played Yeovil's Edna Bessell, the current Four Wood Singles champion and lost 16-7.

Bessell went on to clinch the title.

Last Sunday at Ilfracombe in the first round of the Men's Coronation Cup, Section Eight (Plymouth), lost to Section One (Barnstable/Bideford).

It was disappointing for Section Eight, who led for most of the game and at the 15 end mark were nine shots clear – but a strong finish by their opponents over the last six ends saw them snatch it 126-105.

Section Seven (Plymouth) play their first round match against Section Three at Honiton Sunday, August 10 (10am).
