New car park aims to bring in shoppers

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 18:49

A NEW car park is set to open next week to bring more shoppers to Plymouth city centre's West End.

The short stay car park at the rear of the city market, previously used by traders, will open to the public on Monday.

The move is linked to the wider £3.1 million West End regeneration scheme, funded by Plymouth City Council, which is due to start in the New Year.

Cllr Kevin Wigens, the city council's Cabinet member for transport, said: "As a council we are doing all we can to support small traders in the West End of Plymouth, particularly at this difficult economic time.

"Opening the market car park to shoppers is the latest in a number of measures we have supported, including offering free parking at Western Approach for Thursday late night Christmas shopping and our substantial investment in the upcoming regeneration of the West End."

Shoppers will be able to park for up to one hour during the day, for 25p per 15 minutes.

There will also be up to three hours parking in the evenings, at 50p per hour, for people visiting restaurants, cafes and bars in the area.

David Draffan, Plymouth City Centre Company managing director, said: "The opening of this new car park is a milestone and the first element of real delivery of the vision published by the City Centre Company in 2006.

"In February the area will benefit from a £3m facelift bringing a further 40 short stay parking spaces and new high-quality environment marking a new era for the West End."

Sally Perdrisat, markets and street trading manager, added: "We are very grateful for the support of the council and Plymouth City Centre Company and to traders who have given up their parking to make it more convenient to visit the market and Independent Quarter."

The nine-month project to transform the Independent Quarter is expected to start at the end of January and is the first step of the West End Vision, which aims to establish the area as a vibrant district.
