Plymouth projects win awards

Friday, November 21, 2008, 07:37

PROJECTS from Plymouth were showered with prizes at Exeter's Met Office this week, beating stiff competition from nearly 100 entrants.

The 2008 Devon Environmental Business Initiative Awards honoured Plymouth City Council and its partners for turning an empty building in Stonehouse into two affordable, 'green' flats.

DEBI judge Mark Hodgson said: "This eco-renovation is a great model for others to use.

"The flats are equipped with a whole range of environmental features.

"But, most importantly, the carbon emissions resulting from refurbishing an empty house are only a third as much as a new build project."

Meanwhile the city's C3 Bureau was recognised for developing remote monitoring and other innovative techniques to help businesses reduce their gas, electricity and water usage, and to slash their carbon outputs by up to 20 per cent.

C3's clients include EDF, the MoD and Devon County Council.

Bigbury Bay Oysters, suppliers to a number of Plymouth restaurants, took home the Food and Farming trophy.

Raising premium organic oysters demands the highest standards of water quality, and the family firm won the award thanks to its owners' tireless efforts to help locate and overcome sources of pollution throughout the River Avon and its estuary.

Markstone Farm near Modbury received a runner-up prize in that category.

DEBI Chairman Andy Vickery said: "It's great to hear so much good news from Devon businesses despite the economic climate.

"More and more firms are finding that green initiatives can give them a major marketing edge, and at the same time help to keep their energy bills and other resource costs to a minimum."

The night's biggest prize went to Paignton Zoo.

Having triumphed in the Sustainable Tourism category, the zoo went on to clinch DEBI's overall Green Business Award for 2008.
