Shining examples of talent

Our annual Youth Awards today aim to show the good, praiseworthy, inspiring and uplifting qualities which our teenagers possess. Although the majority of Plymouth's youngsters are a credit to themselves, their families and their schools or colleges, it is unfortunately the actions of the minority which can influence public opinion. Which is why The Herald aims to shine the spotlight on those under-18s whose actions are worthy of the highest praise, in the hope that negative stereotypes can be replaced by a more accurate reflection of what most city youngsters are like.
It is apt that a young man who has shown a global audience what Plymouth's young people have to offer was today presenting prizes to his peers who have helped make a difference to our city. At the tender age of 14 Tom Daley is well on the way to becoming a sporting superstar, thanks to the way he conducts himself and his impressive performances in his chosen sport at venues around the world. Tom, who became one of the 'faces' of the Beijing Olympics, has set a fine example by showing what dedication and enthusiasm – allied to talent and a capacity for hard work – can achieve. He is a fitting role model, but so too are all those nominated for awards. These young men and women have demonstrated what a wealth and depth of talent and creativity Plymouth has, and why all of us should be positive and proud about our city's future. The range of awards shows the many areas in which Plymouth's citizens of tomorrow are excelling, from young entrepreneurs and volunteers, to those overcoming significant challenges and young people who are helping make Plymouth a better place; from young engineers and budding journalists who have produced their own mini-newspapers, to those who have done most to champion and represent Plymouth. Competition has been fierce, which is a testament to the qualities and attributes of the many candidates. It also demonstrates what high standards the award winners had to attain. We congratulate them all – and wish them every success for the future.
