CHARITY DREAMING OF A KITE CHRISTMAS
Friday, November 21, 2008, 07:00
Santa was towed down the river from Calstock to Saltash on a sleigh raft constructed by members of the Tomorrow's People Working It Out programme in Plymouth, who are undertaking a series of community challenges.
They are raising funds for Tavistock- based CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids), and keeping Santa afloat, was their latest venture.
Santa's sacks were laden with CHICKS kites to highlight the charity's Make a Memory Fly a Kite campaign, launched this year to raise awareness of the plight of underprivileged children living in the UK.
Community fundraiser Jo Westerman said: "We are extremely grateful to Tomorrow's People for choosing to support our charity. With Christmas coming, we wanted to highlight our Make a Memory, Fly a Kite campaign and encourage as many people as possible to buy CHICKS' kites as gifts."
Every year, CHICKS sends all the children who have stayed on a holiday during that year a Christmas present and card.
Jo said: "Christmas is a time for children, and unfortunately for many of those from disadvantaged backgrounds, this time is no different from any other time of the year."
Kites are £5.99 each and can be bought from www.chicks.org.uk , by calling 0845 2770120, or from Mountain Warehouse in Drake Circus Shopping Centre.
Founded in 1984, and operating in Plymouth since 1996, Tomorrow's People is a national charity set up to help individuals and communities overcome long-term unemployment.
