Supervisor stole to 'pay his solicitor'

Millets store in New George Street was already suffering from shoplifters when supervisor Jason Voden decided to take advantage of the situation and steal some items himself, city magistrates were told.
Voden, 37, stole items such as jackets and rucksacks with the intention of selling them to pay the cost of fighting on-going domestic litigation.
But when police were called to Voden's address on an unrelated matter they found the brand new clothing and became suspicious. They were subsequently identified as being stolen stock from Millets and in court Voden, of Antony Gardens, Pennycross, pleaded guilty to theft by an employee between April 1 and May 30 this year.
His solicitor, Anthony Daniel, said Voden had intended to sell the stolen items but when he got them home he didn't know how to and just stored them for months until police called and discovered them. Voden, he said, had been a supervisor at the store for four years and realised he had acted stupidly.
Magistrates sentenced Voden to carry out 120 hours unpaid work in the community.
