Ivybridge hold out for draw after middle-order slump at Chagford

Monday, September 01, 2008, 01:00

C DIVISION

IVYBRIDGE ran out of steam a little too soon at Chagford and had to settle for a losing draw.

Kelvin Trent (4-22) and Paul Veale (4-22) were the main wicket-takers for the Bridge as Chagford were bowled out for 174.

Opener Del Owen (40) and skipper Colin Mortimore (24) put on 57 for Chagford with the Christophers brothers, Jeremy (30) and Duncan (13) adding 41 lower down.

The Bridge were going well at 86 for three with Nick Dunn (46) Gareth Andrews (19) and Trent (19) all weighing in.

Then a steady decline started, prompted by the Christophers – Duncan taking 3-28 and Jeremy 2-31 – with backing from Prakash Joshi (2-26).

Although Chris Greenhouse made 38 there wasn't much from the rest as Ivybridge dipped to 139 for eight with a handful of overs to bowl and patted back for a draw at 151 for nine.

D DIVISION

LEWDOWN secured their status by claiming a winning draw in the Moorland derby with Bridestowe.

Batting first Lewdown banked full batting points thanks to a total of 219 led by Jack Scuse (57), Justin Gliddon (47) and Mevan Porage (34).

Gary Sizmur and Guy McDougall both bagged braces for the hosts and home skipper Chris Lavis took 3-47.

With half the team back in the pavilion and only 130 on the board, things looked decidedly uncomfortable for Bridestowe, but they steadied the ship and finished the game on 153-8.

Sizmur completed a fine afternoon's work with 20 while Phil Woods helped out with an invaluable 35.

Porage, Charlie Hughes and skipper Dave Ball each took two wickets.

E DIVISION

CHAMPIONS-elect Yelverton needed just a point to seal the title on Saturday.

They duly got it and more (19) from a 20-run victory at Lustleigh.

Jason Degg (39) and Tom Stevens (37) combined to help Yelverton to 181.

Yelverton skipper Rob Guy then claimed season-best figures of seven for 38 to bowl the hosts out for 161.

Geoff Brain took the other three wickets to fall (3-19), while Mike Wright (50) and Phil Wright (40) – no relation – scored the bulk of the home side's runs.

Whitchurch, already up, probably took their foot off the pedal against Countess Wear.

If they did they paid the price as the visitors spoiled the promotion party, departing with a seven-wicket win.

Aaron Churchill (49), Jack Newton (31) and an unbeaten 29 from Ben Neale helped the home side to 197-9.

The Wear romped to a seven-wicket win thanks to James Hope (55 not out), James Bogue (54 not out) and Mark Davey (50).

Exeter Civil Service were asked to bat by visitors Woodland Fort and promptly racked up 279-9, led by Harry Well-Forrester with an unbeaten 101.

Howard Rose chipped in with 55 and Lee Craven hit 43.

Craven then took 3-19 and Kris Kalderhead bagged 3-4 as Woodland Fort were bowled out for 113.

Mike Burnett, who had earlier taken 2-47, top scored with 32 for the visitors.
