Plymouth tail wag to bag Sandford victory
Monday, September 01, 2008, 01:00
A home win looked unlikely when the city side were 125 for eight chasing 202 to win.
But 15-year-old Plymouth College student George Stephenson, who hit an unbeaten 64, and former skipper David Burke, with 33 not out, batted sensibly to claim the victory.
And Plymouth will be more than happy with a final placing of sixth from ten.
Sandford's total of 201 all out was made in quickfire fashion in just 37.3 overs. The main run-getter was skipper Richard Foan, who belted an unbeaten century.
Andy Horrill struck twice early on to remove Sandford openers Matt Theedom and Adrian Small – one caught at cover, the other at point.
Foan and David Lye pushed the score up to 64 for three before Burke struck to dismiss Lye for 25.
Foan dominated the rest of the innings, pulling Russ Discombe (12) and Doug Hondo (17) along with him on the way to 102 not out.
Burke (4-80) got stuck into the middle order, and then Chris Barr (2-29) prised out a couple of stragglers.
Foan ran out of people to bat with on 102, which came off exactly 100 balls and included 15 fours and a six.
He was severe on opposite number Luke Minett, who retired from the attack after going for 20 in two overs.
Plymouth, in reply, shot along to 50 without loss and were on 89 when it all started to go wrong for them.
Foan deployed spinners Simon Ashplant and Richard Coupe to good effect as Plymouth slumped to 94 for four and then 125 for five, six, seven and eight.
Coupe snared three wickets – among them top scorer Barr, who made 72 off 97 balls and was one of four wickets to go in the space of 12 balls.
Plymouth were staring down the barrel when Burke came out to join Stephenson, but time was on their side because they had 12 extra overs for dismissing Sandford early.
Coupe was seen off, and Lye (2-50) was dealt with when he returned for a second spell and the winning post was passed in the sixth extra over.
Stephenson faced 89 balls for his 64 not out and hit nine fours and a six.
Plympton made Sidmouth work for a three-wicket win which gave them the Premier Division title.
Plympton struggled to 123 for eight in their full 50 overs.
David Wrench (39) was the Plympton anchorman, taking the score to 74 for four. Chip-ins from Andy Walter (17) and Craig Miles (19no) were worth more than they seem.
Sidmouth found runs hard to come by and were indebted to opener Josh Bess for sticking for 53. He was fourth out at 71 when Sidmouth were falling apart against the bowling of Keith Donohue (3-26) and Arwyn Jones (2-30).
Sixty-six for two became 85 for seven when Murray came out to join Barlow.
Murray wanted to finish with a victory and sensible batting got him his wish.
