Tavvy victory lifts Luffman

Monday, August 25, 2008, 07:00

TAVISTOCK collected a hollow 111-run win over Braunton at the ring that came too late to save them from the drop.

The Moorlanders' fate was already settled before the latest round of fixtures, although skipper Steve Luffman said the win was welcome.

"This season has gone now and we have to look forward not back," said Luffman.

"We have gone out with a side containing seven teenagers and a few old fossils like me and picked up a good result.

"With that sort of talent coming through the future of the club can only be rosy."

Left-hander Dave Manning blasted a typically ebullient 82, which contained eight fours and four sixes, as Tavvy posted 210 for eight.

Manning and Andy Kaitiff (19) put on 55 for the third wicket, with Luffman also making 19 as he and Manning added 49 more for the fourth. Ian Gray opened up with 25.

Jon Baglow (2-33) and Fraser James (2-41) were the best of the Braunton bowlers. Mark Mitchell, who bowled two overs for 24, didn't fare so well.

Braunton were gunned down by Tavvy's South African paceman Steve Dembitzer, who bagged six wickets for nine runs. Three of those wickets came in the same over.

Andy Paddison made 64 of Braunton's 99 all out. Mitchell was the only other batter to reach double figures.

Cornwood's game against South Devon was rained off just when it was getting interesting.

Pakistani Rizwan Saeed helped himself to a century at run-a-ball rate as South Devon posted 187 for nine innings closed.

Rizwan, who smote six fours and three sixes, put on 124 for the fourth wicket with Phil Blackmore (44) before falling for exactly 100 to fellow countryman Aizaz Cheema (4-59).

Blackmore pulled a hamstring while batting and took no further part in the game.

Duncan Boase and James Horgan (20) gave the Corns a reasonable start as they reached 50 for one.

Sixty-seven for five was a different story though after Vivek Kulkarni (3-40) picked off Horgan and Kevin Willcock in successive deliveries and Chris Metters (2-18) got among the wickets at the other end.

Veteran's Dave Tall (29) and Dave Petherbridge (26no) steered Cornwood to 103 for five when the rain came down.

With nothing at stake for either side, the game was called off rather than prolong the agony of watching it drizzle in fading light.
