The crime that proves nothing is sacred
THERE are certain crimes which stand out because of their appalling consequences and some because of the depth of depravity they represent.
But some crimes stand out because they demonstrate an utter disregard for morality and for the broader community.
The burglary at St Francis of Assisi church in Honicknowle is one such crime.
You do not need to be a Christian or a churchgoer to feel shocked by this attack.

The crooks smashed their way in through a window and made off with some brass candlesticks and the contents of a collection box – money donated by people for candles lit to remember loved ones.
A cross had been moved – apparently abandoned by the burglars as they made their escape.
The vicar, Father David Bailey, speaks in measured tones about those responsible. He rightly says that by burgling the church the criminals are stealing from the community – and in a sense stealing from themselves.
But with admirable compassion he says he wishes the raiders had another way to support themselves and if they are in desperate need the church is there to help them.
Father Bailey's calm and forgiving tone is a credit to him but The Herald shares the outrage of many. There are some places which should be beyond even the most villainous criminal – churches, war memorials and mosques are clear examples.
The people responsible live among us and someone knows who they are. This crime should appall even the criminal community and we appeal to everyone to help root out the perpetrators and help the police ring them to justice.
And our message to those responsible is far from the calm and measured tones of Father Bailey. If you are one of the people who sought to line your own pockets by smashing into a church then you really are the lowest form of scum.

“"maybe not to you Foldart but when children need baptising , people wish to get married or bereaved people come to say thier last goodbye to loved ones the church is there for them
Children don't `need` baptizing in fact I consider baptism and christenings quite nauseating considering at the age most of them happen the kids don't even know what religion is let alone what they're `loving` mum and dad have just indoctrinated them into, that's the reason my little one is not going to be christened I prefer to let her make her own choices in life y`know when shes old enough to know what shes doing.
as for marriages and funerals church`s are far and wide not the only game in town anymore, especially for the non religious, I cant imagine a more dreary dull setting to get married and I certainly wouldn't want my funeral to take place under the eyes of that `cult`
I agree with the posters below, horrible crime anyway but making out a church is somehow more sickening then any other building being broken in to is just bizarre in today's day and age.”

“i think your missing the point ,yes its appaling gravestones are vandalised i totally agree but what i was trying to get over was people usually need some kind of religeous intervention somewhere along lifes path and churches and thier priests are there for this purpose .”

“NO, the crime that proves nothing is sacred ,is actually the thugs who destroy headstones etc in cemeteries.”

“Praying to who, swabeys?”

“Praying doesn't cost money or require a building, swabeys. This crime is less appalling than the recent senseless vandalism to the headstones of people's loved ones. Now that really was beneath contempt.”

“Burglary is a crime wherever it is perpetrated. In my view, the church is no more sacred than any other building...”
