Devils out in force at best pairs meet at St Boniface
Friday, August 15, 2008, 07:00
Eight riders who have competed for the city outfit this season will line up for the event.
Devils skipper Seemond Stephens links up with Jason Prynne in an all-Cornish pairing.
Plymouth number one Mark Simmonds will be partnered by 18-year-old team-mate Danny Stoneman.
David Gough and Jamie White-Williams form an all-Devils combination.
Plymouth's high-scoring reserve Paul Starke is partnered by Gary Cottham from Rye House.
While Ben Reade, who rode three heats for the Devils at Rye House in their Knockout Cup semi-final second leg clash last Sunday, will link up with Jaimie Pickard.
The line-up is completed by visiting riders Harland Cook and Dean Felton from Sittingbourne.
Cook, a talented 19-year-old, won the British under-21 qualifying round at Plymouth earlier this season and forms a powerful pairing with his Sittingbourne club captain Felton.
"It is a good rider line-up, with most of the Plymouth riders taking part," said Devils chairman Mike Bowden.
"They are joined by some very good visiting riders and it should prove to be an entertaining meeting.
"All the pairs will fancy their chances of doing well – it should be interesting to see who comes out on top."
Devils duo Tom Brown and Nicki Glanz are ruled out tonight through injury while Kyle Hughes misses out as he is riding for Sheffield at Scunthorpe in the Premier League.
Tonight's meeting will take place over 15 heats, with four points awarded to the heat winner, three to the second place rider, two to the rider in third and none for the fourth.
The pair with the most points will be named the overall winner, with a race-off deciding the victors in the event of a tie.
There is a cash prize of £300 to the winners, £200 to the runners-up and £100 for the pair who finish third.
Admission prices for tonight's meeting are £9 adults, £5 children and £6 OAPs.
Season ticket holders can get in for free.
Meanwhile, although the Devils are without a meeting this weekend, their place in the end of season Conference League play-offs could still effectively be clinched.
Redcar, who currently sit fifth in the standings, are at Weymouth tomorrow and Buxton on Sunday.
Losses in both of those matches for Redcar would all but guarantee Plymouth a top four place and a shot at the title.
Line-up: Seemond Stephens and Jason Prynne, Harland Cook and Dean Felton, Mark Simmonds and Danny Stoneman, David Gough and Jamie White-Williams, Paul Starke and Gary Cottham, Ben Reade and Jaimie Pickard. Reserve: Chesney King.
