City divers hit gold in Irish open triumph

Saturday, November 15, 2008, 07:00

ELLIOTT HATHERLEY took top honours with three golds as Plymouth Diving Club brought back a rich haul of medals from the Irish Open Diving Championships.

The talented teenager, competing in the senior events, was one of 24 divers the city club took to Dublin tournament, against rivals from the host country and Scotland.

Hatherley beat his team-mate and fellow 17-year-old Harry Glover into second place in a great battle over three different boards.

Better known as a platform specialist, Hatherley also won two springboard events to add to his growing reputation.

There were impressive victories, too, for 15-year-old Aaron Walters and Matthew Dixon, aged eight, who came away with two golds and a silver medal apiece in their respective age categories.

Walters, currently English national silver medallist in his age group, topped the podium in the 1m and 2m competitions and was runner-up in the platform event. The diminutive Dixon, competed in the same events and took his medals in the eight to nine age group.

Both look to be contenders for the British Élite Junior Championships next May.

Walters, who is an Ivybridge Community College student was, unsurprisingly, delighted with his performances.

"I was very pleased to have done so well," said Walters, who was making his second appearance in England colours.

"I'd hoped for the best, but as it was an international I was taking nothing for granted."

Also returning with medals were three of the Central Park club's up-and-coming young divers – Shanice Lobb, Ashley Hendrick and Drew Cunningham.

Coach Sally Freeeman was particularly pleased with Lobb and said: "Shanice has made the jump to age group diving from novice diving over the past few months and has an impressive set of dives at a young age.

And there was a battle royale between Cunningham and Hendrick in the 12/13 age groups.

Hendricks edged out his club colleague by three points in the 1m and platform events – the pair collecting silver and bronze medals in the latter event.

In the 3m springboard, Hendrick produced an outstanding effort to take the silver.

Plymouth also had medallists in the novice events, with Matthew King winning gold in the boys' 14-plus, with Milly Wood taking silver in the girls' 14 plus age group.

There was a bronze for Laura Grubb (12/13) and a superb silver for eight-year-old Ollie Piper in the 8/9 age group.

Other results for Plymouth included Abbey Douglas, eighth in 8/9 novice; Greg Kennedy, fifth 10/11 novice, Summer Herbert, 19th 10/11 novice, Alfie Wills, 11th 12/13 novice, Laurence Coath 13th 12/13 novice, Jenny Bunsell three fifth-placed finishes in 10/11 junior, Charlie Wood seventh and eighth places in 14-plus junior, Connor Figg fifth, 10th and 13th in 14+ junior, Mark Shute sixth 14+ Junior, Charlie Cooke ninth and 11th 14+ junior, Ashleigh Thatcher two fifth-places in women's 1m and 3m.
